Consumer body plans closer scrutiny of direct sales companies after Korea King pan controversy
USA:The Consumer Protection Board (CPB) will enforce stricter control over direct sales companies in a bid to stop exaggeration in advertising.
CPB secretary-general Pol Maj-General Prasit Chalermwuttisak said on Saturday that the board would on Monday issue letters to direct sales operators, asking them to send their commercials along with detailed information on their products and their “Buy One Get One Free” sales campaign, so that the board can check whether the pricing was reasonable.
The move comes after the board’s decision to ban advertising for the Korea King frying pan, citing that commercials overstated the quality of the pan relative to its price.
Prasit said the measure could set inspection standards for direct sales operators.
He said the board’s officials had kept a close watch on the Korea King frying pan commercial at the beginning following its questionable promotional pricing.
He said the board acted as the mediator between suppliers and consumers who felt they were lured into buying products of disappointing quality. The board sometimes filed civil lawsuits against companies. source
